The development of the Panzerschreck began based on the captured American "Bazooka" during the Tunisia Campaign in November 1942. The Panzerschreck was larger and heavier than the American model – an 88mm caliber anti-tank rocket launcher versus the 57mm caliber American Bazooka. It could penetrate thicker armor but required a bulkier engine, which produced more smoke during firing.
